Though the inputted query is the same for both generative AI and search engines, such as Google, both retrieve and display the resources differently. For example, generative AI provides new text response based on the provided query. This text response is generated based on the data it was trained on. There are no links to the resources the text response is generated from. While the search engine, does not provide a text response, but a list of resources that match the query provided. This process is done through a ranking algorithm to identify relevant results.
Basically, the AI technology creates it own text, based on the query, training materials and previous results. Search engines retrieves the resource and connects the user to these resources based on the query.
Internet connected AI Chatbots have real time access to the internet, not just the provided training data, so it use current internet data to generate the text based responses. Even though it is using real time data, it is not generating a list of search results, but summarizing the results in a text response.
All AI will generate "hallucinations" or false information, because of the limitations of AI, such as limited data sets to retrieve information and word usage and meaning. For example, AI models, usually, use datasets they are trained in, so the results are generated from those. In addition, AI models use words to make connections, but they really don't understand the words, so the results will sometimes be wordy, but have no actual meaning. The internet connected AI do have fewer "hallucinations" as their data is generated from current content. Though these still have the language limitations.
